It's hard to believe how much has happened in just one year. Yet when we look back on 2024, a few key moments quickly come to mind - not just the ones that affect Navitasoft, but the ones that have shaken up the energy world in general.
Setting up the BRELL disconnect
The Baltics made a historic decision to disconnect from the Russian grid, with February 2025 marked as the big date. Together with our partner N-SIDE, we’re proud to be supporting this transformation with the Baltic Balancing and Capacity Market (BBCM) project for TSOs Elering, Augstsprieguma tīkls AS and Litgrid - a massive undertaking that’s about much more than just delivering software. In the end, we help to integrate these countries into the European fold for years to come.
Working on BBCM reminded us of our earlier efforts with Ukrenergo when Ukraine took similar steps under much tougher conditions. Helping countries gain energy independence is a responsibility we take seriously, and these projects show how much is possible when people come together with a shared goal.
E-world 2024
It just felt right to have E-world back in February, where it belongs. Flexibility and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) stole the show, dominating discussions and reminding us of the growing need to balance a renewable-heavy grid. Our EMoT platform was a major talking point, showcasing how VPPs can use automation to optimize everything from EV chargers to storage systems across markets.
In a presentation in the Change Forum, our Business Development Lead, Mike Coulten, shared hard-hitting lessons on cybersecurity, drawing on Ukraine’s experiences. He talked about the growing risks for energy systems and the importance of proactive defenses. Between meaningful conversations at our booth and reconnecting over Hungarian wine at our Tuesday evening reception, E-world set the tone for a dynamic year.
Flex, Flex, Flex
And then there was flexibility. It feels like everyone is finally talking about it. E-world, Flexcon, the smartEn/LCP Delta study - you name it, flexibility was the headline with demand-side response and the growing role of smaller assets helping to balance volatile grids. Meanwhile, Enlit 2024 turned its focus to grid resilience, digging into the challenges of renewable integration and making flexibility services easier to roll out. Demand-side flexibility (DSF), VPPs, storage… the conversations are finally catching up with what’s needed to make grids work for a renewable future.
Although it has been amazing to see ideas turning into action, there’s still a long road ahead. Negative electricity prices are becoming almost normal now, while price spikes remind us of the growing gaps between supply and demand. Flexibility is certainly a major part of the solution, but the need for grid expansion is unavoidable: “No transition without transmission” became the unofficial slogan of 2024, and it couldn’t be more accurate.
We can’t wait for what 2025 will bring
In the new year, we’re ready to keep doing what we do best: supporting TSOs, enabling smarter flexibility, and expanding the tools and markets that help our clients handle these changes. In particular, we look forward to seeing how the Network Code for Demand Response finally shapes up. Meanwhile, the Baltics will synchronize with the Continental European grid in February, and we’re thrilled to play a role in making that a success.
To our customers, partners, and team: thank you. Your trust, collaboration, and creativity are what drive us forward every single day. 2024 was an incredible year, and we’re excited to see what we can achieve together in 2025.
Here’s to another year of progress. Let’s get to it!
P.S. Want to learn more about the Baltic disconnect project and their synchronization with the west? Come to our panel discussion at E-world, just days after the sync occurs, to learn the why, when and how of it all!
